Jon is a mineral economist (née geologist) with experience in exploration, resource definition, mining and project valuation gained from work with Western Australian mining and consulting companies. Jon specializes in the field of mineral asset valuations, in which he is an innovator, practitioner and trainer.

Jon is a Member of the Australian Institute of Geoscientists ("AIG") and a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. Volunteer activities include being on the:

  • AIG:
    • WA Branch Committee
    • Membership review panel
    • VALMIN Code – Australian code for the technical assessment and valuation of mineral and petroleum assets and securities for Independent Expert Reports:
      • Review Committee
      • Conference Committee

Jon gained his BSc (Applied Geology) in 2000 and has since complemented his geological skills by undertaking an MSc (Mineral Economics). Jon is pursuing a PhD in Mineral Economics with the view to deriving new valuation methods and quantifying mineral market characteristics. His thesis is through publishing articles in industry journals, with the research topics including how value is affected by changes in:

  • Sovereign risk
  • Confidence in a deposits quantity and quality estimate
  • Partial control (e.g. buying 51% instead of 100% of a deposit)
  • Exploration potential
  • Commodity prices
  • Co- and by-products

The individual studies are often taken in partnership with industry organisations. This approach allows a breadth of specialist skills to be harnessed, provides an industry reality check and through having multiple champions, helps promote the application of the findings.
