Desmond Lascelles has 40 years experience as an exploration and mining geologist for a wide variety of base metals plus diamonds and some industrial minerals, specializing in iron ore, and has spent the last 30 years as an independent consultant. He semi-retired in 1998 and enrolled as part-time Ph.D student but is still involved in part-time consulting work. He was appointed as an Adjunct Research Fellow in 1998.

His main research interests are in the description and genesis of BIF and iron ore deposits.
