Sumail was born in the city of Chandigarh, India. Growing up at the foothills of the Himalayas, Sumail shared a strong bond with the great mountain ranges and it was this which developed a passion in him for geology. After school, Sumail decided to pursue this passion into a career by completing B.Sc. (Hons) in Geology from Panjab University in his home city. During this time, Sumail spent a lot of time travelling in the Himalayas and started looking at the tectonic processes taking place in the region. This imparted an interest of structural geology in Sumail. Being far away from any mining centres in India, most of Sumail’s studies focused on the ‘pure’ aspect of geology. To expand his knowledge in the field of applied geology, Sumail decided to move to Perth, Australia and enrolled in the Master of Geoscience course here at UWA in 2018. During this time, Sumail collaborated with Dr Nicolas Thebaud to undertake a research project focusing on the ‘multiscale structural analysis of the Boulder Lefroy Shear Zone’ which is one of the most well-known shear zones in orogenic gold systems. After completing his masters in 2019, Sumail went to the industry to gain some experience. For the next few months Sumail stayed in Kambalda, WA to work as an exploration geologist at the St. Ives Gold Mine for Gold Fields.

Sumail commenced his PhD in March 2020 at the Centre for Exploration Targeting, School of Earth Science, UWA under the supervision of Dr Nicolas Thebaud and Dr Quentin Masurel. The aim of Sumail’s PhD is to focus on the early architectural control on orogenic gold deposits while looking at the world-class Jundee gold deposit in Western Australia. This study will use a combination of detailed structural-stratigraphic analysis with geochemical-geophysical methods to try identify the early architecture at the camp/deposit-scale and understand its control on orogenic gold systems.

Also, Sumail only has a single name.
