Lithospheric processes of intraplate tectonics

Western Australia

The modern-day example of India's collision with Eurasia, and the associated deformation throughout east and south-east Asia shows that the interiors of tectonic plates cannot be considered rigid bodies under plate tectonic forces.

Deformation styles within plates can include widespread deformation as well as zones of intense deformation. In this project we aim to establish an understanding of the first and second order lithospheric processes that contribute to controlling the location, style and evolution of deformation. Methods include 2D and 3D geophysical modelling and numerical modelling. Intraplate regions host many significant mineral deposits, as well as oil-and gas reserves, and understanding the processes behind their formation is important for understanding the generation of these deposits.
